Dartmoor Prison information
Built in 1809 Dartmoor prison held French and American prisoners of war. It became a criminal prison from 1850 & most of the buildings date from the late 19th century, with the museum opening in 1996 detailing the history of the prison from the beginning to the present day.
Dartmoor is a Category C training prison and has done much in recent years to shake off its historically austere image.

Accommodation: Dartmoor offers cellular accommodation on 6 wings – Arch Tor, Burra Tor, Down Tor, Fox & Granite Tor & East Tor, the inside is clean, welcoming and well kept. Some wings are used for specialist reasons such as vulnerable prisoners, induction, and Resettlement Unit where a small community of prisoners live, working on projects outside of the prison as part of the establishment's Resettlement Strategy.
